That and also the original issue is brilliantly contextualised and much better expressed than I could have done. I hope I don't sound like I'm marking an undergraduate essay ; ) xParticulationshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02947346759330291873noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-786934403154990603.post-58863295977206387152013-11-05T15:43:43.789+00:002013-11-05T15:43:43.789+00:00As your brother I have seen at first hand how much...As your brother I have seen at first hand how much work goes into attaining the knowledge (hence expertise also) in a subject to enable someone to not only be very good at something but also to enable them to teach others and knowing that this is their desire rather than their plan to become rich or their motivation to make lots of money. Real success at this stage can only be to get work in the subject you studied.

Due to the economic situation those that maybe deserve reward or some kind of payback for their efforts are having to fall back onto doing work they were well capable of doing not only before they began their studies but in some cases like for mature students the possibility of having to do similar work to when they left school.

What a shame for both the teacher that is unable to teach and for the pupils that may never be taught the subjects.

Until the balance is addressed of those earning 50 times as much as a lecturers salary in bonuses each year or only 30 times such amounts if they are not doing their job properly (all from the Tax Payers money) Until such issues are addressed the UK can never be the same again as it has been in the past and the job market neither. There are those earning more then they ever have with a guarantee attached and the rest of us. So the class system in England is going back to the Victorian age in real terms for those that have and those that have not.

Also its turning full circle again. The Employer is able with little chance of comeback to abuse the worker (eg Zero hours contracts) as nobody dare speak out in fear of loosing their job. There are more rules than were ever necessary for such things as workers rights but what use are they when the people are afraid to even mention them in fear of being ousted out of their job in situations such as constructive dismissal which is common place in the security industry and warehousing and many other types of work out there now.
Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03864128834969287299noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-786934403154990603.post-61701529407936738932013-11-05T10:17:57.997+00:002013-11-05T10:17:57.997+00:00Hi Sian. In a way I think I've written myself out of a job in academia, since higher education has been the subject of my thesis and the economic/performative nature of the system seems so at odds with why I wanted to be a lecturer in the first place - to teach...Particulationshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02947346759330291873noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-786934403154990603.post-16045998613551531912013-11-05T09:38:00.486+00:002013-11-05T09:38:00.486+00:00Very interesting post, and one I can really relate...Very interesting post, and one I can really relate to. At one the researching training induction sessions at Exeter in September there was a discussion along similar lines in which the 'career' was held up to be revered as some sort of Holy Grail. Like you, I've been an itinerant for most of my life and even with a PhD I'd hope to continue ploughing my own furrow. Of course, most of the new research students were in their mid to late twenties so it is, in many respects, harder for them. What concerns me about the roundabout idea is that having 'no idea' will take in a never-ending loop. In my experience quite the opposite can happen. Anyway, good luck with the research and negotiating the academic technocracy.Sian Lacey Taylderhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14376422192437209839noreply@blogger.com
